Ally Financial is a digital bank that makes most of its money from auto lending. It originated as GM's financing arm and still focuses heavily on that market — over 70% of its loan book consists of consumer auto loans and dealer floorplan financing (loans to car dealerships to stock inventory). Customers are retail car buyers and auto dealers across the U.S. Beyond auto, Ally offers deposit accounts, credit cards, mortgages, commercial loans, auto insurance, and brokerage services. Revenue comes primarily from net interest income on loans, with insurance premiums and fee income as secondary sources.
